4 Ride-Or-Die Products for Curly Hair, for the Road or at Home
You may have noticed I have very curly hair. When I was young, it was literally the bane (and embarrassment) of my existence. I dreamt of waking up to slick straight hair that, in my mind, always looked so utterly perfect in a messy bun. None of this frizzy curly hair business.
These days, it's quite the opposite. I'm incredibly proud of my curly locks, which are not only beautiful but also the very manifestation of my vivacious nature. And, with age, I’ve learnt not only to love my locks but also designed the perfect curly hair routine. Anyone with curly hair - no wait - dry frizzy curly hair - will know the struggle. It took me years to find the best products for curly hair, ones that would nurture and truly enhance my ringlets.
This was mostly because the beauty world was very slow to catch on and design decent curly girl hair products. But we’ve come a long way. Now, you can even find incredible organic curly hair products on the shelves, my preferred option of late. It did take tonnes of trial and error, but I finally found the right products that not only perfectly style my curls but also create long-lasting hair health and, most importantly, keep the frizz at bay.
So without further ado, here’s my list of tried-and-tested crème de la crème haircare products for curly hair. I beg of you to try them if you haven't already.
1) Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo and 2) Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner: I discovered this set thanks to my wonderful London hair salon, Ena. (Read all about why I’m a devotee here.) On my first visit I met the founder Johnny, who took one look at my dry, wilted curls and said it was about time I start showing them some love. He tossed me a few samples of this Davines Love combo (see what I did there?) which I trialled over a few weeks and I’ve never looked back since.
The entire Davines haircare range is organic so the products are gentle by nature. Davines Love Shampoo has a slightly sticky consistency so you only need one big dollop to lather this through all of your hair. When I rinse it out, my hair feels squeaky clean but also really nourished. Davines Love Conditioner is mega-think and feels a bit like putty. I don't need much (unless my hair is due a cut and my split ends are showing) but I like to cover every inch of my hair in this delicious product. I let this soak for the duration of my shower and when I finally rinse it out, my hair is silky soft and smells divine!
3) Davines Oi Hair Oil: Can you tell I'm a Davines hair products fangirl? This dreamly oil for curly hair works wonders for frizz control and nourishment. I use this daily, on wet post-shower hair. I squirt a few drops into the palms of my hands and finger comb it through, applying the majority on my ends.
4) Davines Oi Hair Milk: OK, this one isn’t curl-specific but I bloody love it. This all-in-one product packs a serious punch - of hydration, shine, anti-frizz and general haircare health. But I can’t deny it had me at its smell. This delicious product will make you want to style your hair all day, everyday.
4) Boucleme Hair Conditioner: This is the last step in my daily routine. I discovered this hair cream at a beauty event in London. I noticed a small booth with loads of curly-haired girls gathered round. Intrigued, I made a beeline towards the kiosk. I bought a few products from the range, but this one that made the cut into my permanent haircare collection. This cream is thick but lightweight and the simple packaging design makes it easy to control the amount you use. I use this once the Davines oil has settled and my hair is starting to dry. (FYI - I always airdry my curls unless I'm in the depths of winter and have no choice but to blowdry.) Just before I head out the door, I squeeze a few drops of this curl cream into my hand, flip my head upside down and finger comb it through, scrunching my curls as I go. And this product literally refines every single ringlet.
