Top Surfing Destinations for 2024

It will probably come as no surprise, but my life bucket list is LONG. Everything from hot air ballooning to swimming with whales in the South Pacific to surfing the waves across all of the world’s oceans. And truthfully, the more I travel, my bucket list gets longer, not shorter. My travel ambition is to tick a new experience off the list on every single trip. This year, learning to surf has taken that top spot, so I’ve been eyeing up destinations to scratch this itch. But whether you’re keen to learn for the first time, or just desperate to get back on that board, here are four surfing destinations that are currently top of my list. Each offers something for every experience level and traveller style.

Costa Rica

For those seeking a blend of world-class waves and laid-back beach vibes, Costa Rica is an unbeatable choice. Consistent swells roll in year-round, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers. The stunning beaches of Tamarindo and Jaco offer gentle waves perfect for honing your skills, while advanced surfers can tackle the powerful breaks of Pavones and Salsa Brava.

Beyond the waves, holidays in Costa Rica are the perfect choice for nature lovers. Hike through lush rainforests teeming with exotic wildlife or explore the country’s otherworldly volcanic landscapes and hidden waterfalls. After a day on the water, you can also unwind in charming beach towns, devour delicious and fresh local cuisine and slip into real Pura Vida living.

Australia's Gold Coast

Boasting some of the most iconic breaks in the world, Australia’s Gold Coast is undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to surf. Powerful swells and hollow barrels provide an adrenaline rush for experienced surfers, while world-class surf schools cater to beginners with gentler waves and expert tuition.

The Gold Coast also offers a vibrant atmosphere for travellers looking for good vibes, with bustling beach towns, theme parks and a thriving nightlife scene. You can also escape into the area’s scenic hinterland, with its national parks and waterfalls, or chill and soak up the sun on the Gold Coast’s pristine beaches.

Bali

This Indonesian island is a surfer's paradise. Consistent swells and a variety of breaks cater to all experience levels. From the world-famous Uluwatu with its dramatic cliff backdrop to the beginner-friendly beaches of Canggu and Seminyak, Bali offers an unforgettable surfing experience.

But Bali's beauty extends far beyond the surf. Immerse yourself in its rich culture, explore ancient temples and find your inner zen with yoga retreats offered in many of the island’s surf camps. Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, also offers travellers the opportunity to experience traditional crafts, attend local dance performances and explore the island’s breathtaking rice paddies.

Hawaii

The birthplace of surfing, Hawaii is a must-visit for anyone interested in surfing. Experience the legendary waves of Oahu's North Shore, where the colossal Banzai Pipeline attracts big-wave surfers during the winter months. Alternatively, Maui offers a more relaxed feel, with breaks like Lahaina and Kanaha Beach, which are perfect for both beginner and intermediate surfers.

Surfing is deeply ingrained in Hawaiian culture. You can learn the traditional art of wave riding from local instructors and soak up the gorgeous Aloha spirit, with its emphasis on respect and truly living in harmony with nature. Whilst on your trip, you can also look forward to exploring the region’s incredible volcanic landscapes, hike to its hidden waterfalls and witness daily pastel sunsets that will forever be etched in your memory banks.
